The Risky Transformation Process of Saudi Arabia

The recent turmoil in Saudi Arabia, reflected in an unprecedented number of arrests of hundreds of officials, including key leaders of the economic, communications, and political sectors, ostensibly as part of a crackdown on corruption, may prove to be a development of historic magnitude. On November 4, 2017, the Supreme Anti-Corruption Committee headed by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) was formed by a royal decree and given power to interrogate and arrest suspects, prevent them from leaving the country, and freeze their assets.

A Turning Point for the Middle East

Anyone who has ever been involved in intelligence analysis knows how difficult it is to spot a change or a turning point, especially in the context of a prolonged, on-going process.

For us, as Israelis who experienced threats of total destruction and severe terrorist attacks, and continue to experience pinpoint terrorism, it is difficult to lift our heads up and scan the horizon around us. This difficulty is further intensified by the language restrictions we imposed upon ourselves.

Kafka in Jerusalem: Deciphering Strategic Meanings for the Jewish State

"Many people prowl round Mount Sinai. Their speech is blurred, either they are garrulous or they shout or they are taciturn. But none of them comes straight down a broad, newly made, smooth road that does its own part in making one's strides long and swifter." (Franz Kafka, Mount Sinai)

The report does not specify which UAVs are included in the deal but mentions that Honduras ordered more than one type.

The Power Struggle within Saudi Arabia

In the current vision of the Crown Prince Muhammad bin Salman, the Saudi national anti-corruption Commission "Nazaha" has worked very well.

The anti-corruption Nazaha is a complex organization with a large set of international and local rules, always explicitly referring to the UN – and anyway international – best practice.

It will not be so easy to define Mohammed bin Salman's fight against corruption as an "ideological operation" or, even worse, "primitive."
