Israel Announces Evacuation of 28 Communities and Townships Near Northern Border

Hezbollah has been provoking Israel by launching mortars and missiles and attempting infiltrations. As Israel prepares for a ground maneuver in Gaza, in the south, it is also trying to keep its northern residents safe

Israeli tanks are seen on a road near Israel's border with Lebanon, in northern Israel, October 12, 2023.

The National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA) of the Israeli Ministry of Defense and the IDF have announced the implementation of a plan to evacuate residents of northern Israel who live in the area up to two kilometers from the Lebanese border to state-funded guesthouses, totaling 28 communities and townships

The implementation of the plan was approved by Minister of Defense, Yoav Gallant. A short while ago, the Northern Command updated the heads of the local authorities on this decision. The plan will be implemented by the heads of the local municipalities, the Ministries of Interior and Defense, and NEMA. IDF Spokesperson, Daniel Hagari, said that this is intended to provide the IDF with freedom of action as it fights Hezbollah.

As the war in Gaza carries on and Israeli airstrikes intensify, in preparation for a ground maneuver, Hezbollah – Iran’s proxy in Lebanon, has become more and more engaged, firing mortars and missiles over the border and attempting infiltration. Several times a day, civilians all over Israel’s north have been running for shelter, upon hearing the alert sirens.

One Israeli civilian was murdered yesterday (Sunday) in an anti-tank missile barrage launched by Hezbollah on the northern community of Shtula, and several others were injured.

Currently, Hezbollah’s involvement is broadly viewed as a provocation, intended to make things more difficult for Israel and divert military and intelligence attention, as well as psychologically destabilize the Israeli public. As of yet, defense experts believe that the terror organization intends to keep its activity below the threshold of war.

The IDF has been striking Hezbollah posts and infrastructure in response to its shooting, the last retaliatory strike reported just hours ago. This morning, Yediot Aharonot journalist Nahum Barnea reported that the US administration has requested that Israel refrain from launching any proactive attack on Hezbollah, in exchange for an American pledge to involve its own Air Force if need be.

The 28 communities included in the plan are Jewish, Arab, mixed, and Druze. Terror does not discriminate.

Since the current war was launched as a surprise attack by Hamas in the early hours of Saturday, October 7th, more than 1,300 Israelis were murdered or fell in combat. At least 3,000 are wounded, and hundreds are still missing. An unknown number of civilians and soldiers, estimated at 150-200, are held captive in Gaza. This includes women, children, and elderly people. Entire communities, kibbutzim close to the border, were burnt to the ground, with nothing left. Tens of thousands of Israelis (in a country of 10 million) have been left homeless, uprooted, displaced people in their own land.
