100 of War: How Has the IDF Improved?

Over the past three months, the IDF has been trying to adapt and innovate across all domains – from medicine to new units

For the past 100 days, the IDF has been trying to innovate and adapt itself to this unprecedented situation the State of Israel has found itself in the aftermath of the October 7th massacre, across all domains.

In recent weeks, the Medical Corps and personnel in the field have introduced a variety of new medical capabilities tailored to the nature of the combat and changing conditions. The primary treatment that has come into use is the most advanced resuscitation fluid for trauma - whole blood (WB) units. In the past, a casualty in the field needing blood transfusion would receive synthetic resuscitation fluids or freeze-dried plasma, as WB requires specific refrigeration conditions not previously feasible.

There are also new combat means used in the Gaza Strip, such as the “Holit” and “”Yated” shoulder missiles, which are safer for the fighters operating them; new night-vision means; the new “Eitan” APC; the laser-and- GPS-guided “Iron Sting” bomb, which enables precise strikes and therefore minimizes the risk of collateral damage; the SMASH smart electro-optic rifle sight, which includes a fire-control system; and more.

Israel Air Force’s F-35i Adir jets from Squadron 140 ('Golden Eagle') and Squadron 116 ('Southern Lions'), have, for the first time, carried out attacks using JDAM smart bombs, which are attached to the wings of the aircraft. Israel is the first country in the world to use them in operational activity.

According to the IDF, this represents a significant improvement to the Adir system's attack capabilities, enabling more attacks with fewer flights. Until now, the Adir jets carried the munitions inside the aircraft, but today they can carry a much larger number of munitions, using various types of bombs, providing flexibility and adaptation to a range of missions in a single sortie.

There have also been innovations at sea, with the INS Magen, a Saar 6-class ship, joining operational activity and deploying in the Red Sea arena as part of strengthening defense efforts.

This war has also seen joint warfare at its best, more so than ever before, with various land, air, and naval units working together within enemy territory.

The IDF also decided to establish a new brigade, named “Guardian” (855), that will comprise reservists from several units and focus on defending Israeli communities.
