As part of the process of upgrading the Formidable-class frigate fleet of the Singapore Navy, which includes six ships, Blue Spear anti-ship missiles will be installed on these vessels as a replacement for the American Harpoon missiles.

The Blue Spear missiles are a 5th generation version of the well-known "Gabriel" missile developed and produced in cooperation between the IAI (Israel Aerospace Industry) and the Singaporean company ST Engineering.

The Singaporean company announced in mid-December that its subsidiary ST Engineering Marine Ltd. had secured a contract with the Singaporean Ministry of Defense (MINDEF) for the mid-life upgrade of its Formidable-class Frigates for the Singaporean Navy (RSN). ST Engineering will design and engineer the frigate’s marine and electrical systems upgrades, including the Ship Management System and Power Generation System. The Frigates will be upgraded progressively, with the first Frigate expected to complete its upgrades in 2028.

According to the Italian website Aresdifesa website, besides the 8 Blue Spear missiles, the Frigates are armed with two eight-cell A-50 VLS for Aster 15-30 missiles, two eight-cell A-43 VLS for missiles Aster 15, two B515 triple torpedo launchers for A244/S Mod.3 anti-submarine torpedoes, one 76/62 mm Leonardo Super Rapido cannon, two 25 mm Mk38 Mod2 Typhoon Weapon Station systems, four 12.7 mm caliber STK 50MG heavy machine guns and with a multi-role S-70B Seahawk helicopter.
