Romanian Army Set to Equip with US Abrams Tanks

Special units of the Balkan army begin to be equipped with Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV) in the M1278A1 Heavy Gun Carrier configuration

The American State Department has approved the sale of military equipment to Romania at a value of $2.53 billion. As part of this deal, the Romanian army will receive fifty-four (54) M1A2 SEPv3 Abrams Main Battle Tanks, fifty-four (54) M1A1 Structures, four (4) M88A2 HERCULES Combat Recovery Vehicles, four (4) M1110 Joint Assault Bridges, four (4) M1150 Assault Breacher Vehicles and four (4) Heavy Assault Scissor Bridges (HASB).

In addition to these combat vehicles, the US will supply the Romanian army with machine guns, 120 mm shells of various types, tank engines, mine rollers, Common Remote Operated Weapons Station Low Profile (CROWS-LP), trucks and trailers, communication equipment, and GPSs.

At the same time as this massive deal, special units in the Romanian army received the first 33 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV) produced by the American company Oshkosh Defense. This delivery is part of an agreement from March 2023 worth $104 million for the total supply of 129 JLTV vehicles in the M1278A1 Heavy Gun Carrier configuration.
