Hezbollah Fires Kornet Anti-Tank Missiles at Israeli Targets

The Kornet anti-tank missiles are believed to be in the possession of Hezbollah and Hamas, with their source likely being in Syria and/or Iran. They are considered today to be the most advanced anti-tank missiles held by Hezbollah

Since the beginning of the war, the Hezbollah terror organization has launched a number of Kornet anti-tank missiles toward Israel, resulting in the killing and injuring of several soldiers and civilians, as well as damaging IDF vehicles and civilian vehicles.

The Kornet missiles and launchers in the hands of Hezbollah and Hamas are of unknown quantity, likely originating from Syria and/or Iran. These missiles are considered today to be the most advanced missiles held by the Hezbollah organization.

The 9M133 Kornet (known as AT-14 Spriggan in NATO) is a second-generation anti-tank laser-guided missile manufactured in Russia. It entered service with the Russian military in 1994 as a replacement for the Konkurs missile. The missile is capable of penetrating armor up to 1,000-1,200 millimeters thick, and its range is between 100 meters and 5.5 kilometers.

The missile is designed to target slow-moving and low-flying aircraft. The Kornet system has two models: the 9M133-1 with two tandem warheads and the 9M133F-1 with a thermobaric (fuel-air explosive) warhead.

Hezbollah used the Kornet missiles for the first time during the Second Lebanon War in 2006. In that war, Kornet missiles targeted several IDF armored vehicles and caused casualties among IDF soldiers positioned in buildings in southern Lebanon.

During Operation "Protective Edge" in 2014, Hamas used Kornet missiles against IDF armored tanks and Namer armored personnel carriers (APCs), but there were no casualties. The Iron Dome active defense system successfully intercepted Kornet missiles fired at the armored tanks with the Mark 4 designation.

Hezbollah and Hamas also carried out several attacks using Kornet missiles against military targets and military vehicles, resulting in the deaths and injuries of both Israeli soldiers and civilians.
