A major deal for Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems: The U.S. Navy plans to acquire three Iron Dome batteries, including 44 launchers and 1,840 Tamir interceptors.

WAR ZONE reports that the exact value of the transaction is not known, but it is estimated to be around $200 million. The Marines need Iron Dome for defense against rocket attacks, and these systems also have capabilities to defend against missiles and artillery.

The details of the purchase are published on the U.S. government website. The acquisition will be carried out by the Marines through Raytheon, which markets the system in the U.S. under the brand SKY HUNTER.

The Marines have been working since 2020 to equip themselves with the medium-range Intercept capability (MRIC) system.

The website states that the U.S. Navy intends to acquire, in addition to missiles and interceptors, electronic warfare control units, 11 combat management systems, data processing, and display systems, as well as logistical equipment and ancillary gear.

The Marines currently possess an advanced prototype of various components of the system, including Tamir interceptors. Each launcher can carry 20 interceptors simultaneously, and each interceptor has an active radar seeker and a dual data transmission channel.

The interceptor has high maneuverability and carries an explosive warhead with a laser fuze. The price of each interceptor ranges from $40,000 to $100,000, making it relatively inexpensive compared to other similar surface-to-air missiles, as reported by WAR ZONE.

Since June, the Marines have successfully conducted two live firing tests of the MRIC prototype against simulated missile threats.
