Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid had a busy day in New York yesterday (Tuesday), meeting with both the King of Jordan, His Majesty King Abdullah II, and with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The meeting with King Abdullah was arranged against the backdrop of escalating tensions in the West Bank in recent weeks. This is the leaders’ second meeting since July 2022, when they met at the royal palace in Amman.

“The Prime Minister spoke with His Majesty about the need for calming the situation on the ground and halting terrorism ahead of the upcoming Jewish holidays,” reads a statement by the Prime Minister’s Office, adding that Lapid “emphasized that Israel will not stand idly by and will fight terrorism directed against it in all its forms, and will not allow harm to the security of its citizens.”

Prior to the meeting, King Abdullah spoke at the plenary, saying that Christianity is “under fire” in Jerusalem, and that “the rights of churches in Jerusalem are threatened. The king also raised concerns about violence in the Temple Mount (known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif), adding that only a two-state solution can resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Jordanian Wakf is the custodian of Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian holy sites.

Following his meeting with the king, Lapid met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan – their first meeting since the announcement of the restoration of full diplomatic representation and the return of Ambassadors and Consuls-General to Israel and Turkey.

“The two leaders discussed the fight against terrorism in Israel and generally. Lapid thanked President Erdoğan for intelligence cooperation at the time of Iran’s attempts to carry out terrorist attacks on Turkish soil,” said the Prime Minister’s Office.

Another meeting held yesterday was with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Lapid stressed his expectations regarding the need, on Gueterres’ part, to act in order to rectify the discriminatory treatment of Israel at the United Nations, in particular stopping the activity of the Commission of Inquiry. The two also discussed the fight against antisemitism and terrorism in broader terms.

Tomorrow (Thursday), Lapid is expected to address the plenary.
