As Israel seeks Germany's aid on Iran, it also offers military protection

“Israel will play a role in building Germany's new defense force, mainly in the field of air defense,” said Israeli Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, following his meeting with Germany Chancellor Olaf Scholtz in Berlin on Monday.

Lapid’s visit to Germany is another link in the chain of diplomatic efforts by Israel’s top diplomats and defense experts to halt the resurrection of the Iran nuclear deal. The Israeli leader “presented the Chancellor sensitive and relevant intelligence information” regarding Iran, he said, and the two “discussed the need for a new strategy to stop Iran's nuclear program.”

However, perhaps more interesting is that the two discussed Israel’s military capabilities – and how they can help Germany.

At the press conference, Scholtz said Germany is planning on strengthening its defense systems by procuring additional air defense systems. He referred to the Arrow (Hetz) 3 – manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) as a “high performance offer.”

However, neither leader went into specifics. German and global press estimates that, should this deal come to fruition, the price tag will be around 2 billion euros.

After the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Germany allocated a 100 billion euros fund for a dramatic revamping of its military. Shultz called it yesterday an “investment in our security and in the security of our neighbors. We are really interested in working with Israel on that.”

On Sunday, Israel and Germany signed an important MOU on youth exchange.

Lapid said that his visit “aims to conclude the final details of a strategic partnership agreement between Israel and Germany,” which has “ economic and security benefits.”

Lapid also met with German, President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in Berlin. The two leaders held a private meeting that lasted approximately one hour during which they discussed fighting against Iran’s nuclear program, and the strategic partnership between Jerusalem and Berlin. Lapid also met with Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.
