The US Army awarded SIG Sauer Inc. a $157.3 million contract for the production and supply of precision ammunition in.300 Norma Magnum M1163 ball ammunition and .338 NM armor piercing M1162 cartridges.

German website Soldat & Technik assume that the ammunition is for the Mk22 Advanced Sniper Rifle, which is convertible between both calibers as well as the .308 Winchester. The MK22 Mod 0 is a variant of the Barrett Multi Role Adaptive Rifle (MRAD).

In addition to the Mk22, the .338 NM is also used in the prototype Lightweight Medium Machine Gun currently under development.
