Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett flew in secret to Moscow yesterday (Saturday), where he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin for approximately three hours. He then flew to Berlin to meet with Chancellor Olaf Scholz – and before arrival spoke on the phone with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Also attending the meeting with Putin was Construction and Housing Minister Zeev Elkin, who assisted with translation. Elkin was born in Kharkiv, Ukraine, and still has immediate family in the city, which has been enduring massive attacks by the Russian army, and is currently under Russian siege.

During the Kremlin meeting, the two leaders discussed the humanitarian situation in Ukraine and safety of the large Jewish communities in both Ukraine and Russia, as well as Israel’s continuous freedom of action in Syria’s airspace (effectively controlled by Russia), and the potential renewal of the Iran nuclear deal.

The Prime Minister coordinated this whirlwind trip with the US, France and Germany. Zelensky was also in the know. “Prime Minister of Israel called me after his meeting with Vladimir Putin,” tweeted Zelensky. “We continue dialogue.”

As part of its humanitarian aid to Ukraine, Israel will set up a field hospital in the coming days, which will include adult and pediatric wards, an emergency room and a delivery ward.

And in other related news, Finland’s defense ministry said on Saturday that the country had decided to purchase anti-aircraft equipment either from Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) or from Rafael.
