Iran and North Korea cooperated last year on long-range projects for development of missiles, according to a confidential UN report that may pressure the Biden administration to respond to one of its first big geopolitical crises. The news was reported by Bloomberg.
"This resumed cooperation is said to have included the transfer of critical parts, with the most recent shipment associated with this relationship taking place in 2020," an independent panel of experts monitoring sanctions on North Korea said in the report. The UN panel received information showing the Shahid Haj Ali Movahed research center in Iran received "support and assistance" from a North Korean missile expert for a space launch vehicle, and North Korea was involved in certain shipments to Iran.
In response, Iran said to the members of the panel that "preliminary review of the information provided to us by the panel indicates that false information and fabricated data may have been used in investigations and analyzes of the panel," said the report, which was seen by Bloomberg.
The panel quoted an assessment by a member state that "it is highly likely that a nuclear device can be mounted on the ICBMs, and it is also likely that a nuclear device can be mounted on," shorter range missiles. However, the panel is of the opinion that North Korea still has a problem with resistance to the heat generated when the missile reenters the atmosphere. The claim has been at the center of a dispute between Western missile experts for years.
The panel also looked into the drones displayed by North Korea during a parade in October, and identified them as the "Mavic 2 Pro" manufactured by Chinese technology company DJI. The company had "yet to respond to the panel’s inquiry," the panel added.
