The Defence Blog website reports that the U.S. Special Operations Command intends to award a contract for a new type of armor-piercing ammunition. The command recently announced it will award a one time, sole-source supply contract to Black Hills Ammunition Incorporated to meet its requirements for the .338 Norma Magnum ammunition due to limitations firing the XM1162 in indoor ranges.

The website notes that the XM1162 is an advanced version of the .338 Norma Magnum cartridge developed for the Advanced Sniper Rifle System. The new rifle sniper cartridge with an armor-piercing bullet is used against exposed and sheltered enemy personnel and light armored vehicles when fired from long range precision sniper rifles. Match accuracy is achieved through the optimization of case and bullet geometries as well as tightly controlling tolerances of all components during fabrication.
