The Inspector General of the Bundeswehr, Gen. Eberhard Zorn, visited Israel this week as a guest of IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi.

Massive Increase in Military Spending

Germany’s €45.1 billion defense budget for 2020, which was approved late November by the German parliament (Bundestag), represents a 4.2% increase from 2019.

With the new budget, Germany is approaching its declared goal, agreed by all NATO members, of committing 2% of GDP to defense spending. Next year’s defense budget is expected to put Germany at 1.42%.

The German Ministry of Defense said it plans to spend €8.9 billion on armaments in 2020. According to a report by Jane’s, Germany has allocated €7.4 billion for procurement, €4.5 billion for equipment and vehicle maintenance, and €1.5 billion for development and testing.
