Australia’s major political parties have suffered a cyberattack by a “sophisticated state actor,” Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed.

Speculation has turned swiftly to China as being potentially responsible for the attack, which was first revealed as targeting Parliament House computer networks.

Morrison told Parliament on Monday that it was now known that the Liberal Party, Labor Party, and the Nationals were also targeted.

“Our cyber experts believe that a sophisticated state actor is responsible for this malicious activity,’’ he stated.

“Let me be clear though, there is no evidence of any electoral interference. We have put in place a number of measures to ensure the integrity of our electoral system,’’ the PM added.

The Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO) on Sunday rejected reports “wrongly asserting that the Chinese community is a target for ASIO.”
