Israel has called on the Ghanaian government to back its bid for observer status in the African Union (AU). The official request was made by the chairman of the Likud party in the Israeli Knesset and Chair of the Lobby for Relations between Israel and African Countries, Avraham Neguise when he met with Ghana's Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey.

According to GhanaWeb, Botchwey assured Neguise of Ghana's preparedness to support Israel to return to the fold of the African community for the mutual benefits of the continent and Israel.

Israel was as an observer of the Organization for African Unity (OAU) until it was dissolved and replaced with the AU in 2002. In the last couple of years, Israel has made diplomatic efforts with some nations in Africa to renew their bond of friendship.
