Dr. Aziz Azbar, the head of the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center in Masyaf, and his driver were killed in a car bomb in the city of Masyaf in western Hama on Saturday night, according to Syrian and Lebanese news outlets.

The Scientific Studies and Research Center in Masyaf, also known as CERS, has been the target of two reported airstrike attributed to Israel, including one in late April said to have killed a number of Iranians and another one in July.

The CERS is believed to stockpile chemical agents and missiles with chemical warheads. Reports have also indicated an Iranian missile operation at the site. Azbar was reportedly close to both Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and the Iranian regime.

While fingers are being pointed at Israel for carrying out the attack, the Syrian rebel group Abu Amara Special Task Force has claimed responsibility for the killing.
