“It is true that we left Gaza and are not responsible for what is happening there, but the humanitarian crisis in the Strip is worsening, and it is our duty to contribute to improving the situation there. It is an Israeli security interest to ensure economic welfare for the Gaza Strip. On the other hand, we make it clear that blood of Sinwar and his people is on their own heads. Any harm inflicted on Israeli civilians and soldiers will be met with a response.” These remarks were made today by Maj. Gen. (res.) Yoav Galant, Israel’s Minister of Housing and Construction, in his address at the ‘Fire, Maneuvering and Intelligence in a Complex Environment’ Conference held this week in Tel Aviv. The conference is organized by Israel Defense in cooperation with the Israeli Artillery Association and the Intelligence Heritage & Commemoration Center (IICC).
Galant, former commander of the GOC Southern Command, added that Hamas is in “an increasingly dire situation,” and it has become difficult for it to carry out attacks against Israel, be it by land, sea, or via terror tunnels. The minister stressed that the tunnel threat would be resolved by the end of 2019. Therefore, according to Galant, Hamas is left with inciting riots like the one that happened yesterday. “They are sending women and children to the line of fire to draw media attention. Hamas is the angel of death to the residents of the Gaza Strip. It took two million people captive.”
Addressing the Iranian issue, Galant said that “we now have the opportunity to uproot Iran from Syria. We will not allow the opening of a second front on the Golan Heights, we will not allow Iranian entrenchment in Syria, and we will not allow the introduction of balance-breaking weapons to the Syrian theater.”
