The US Defense Department announced that Boeing has been awarded a $64 million contract to "restart the standoff land attack missile – expanded response (SLAM-ER) production line in support of the government of Saudi Arabia, as well as the redesign of obsolete, nearly obsolete, or uneconomical parts to support production and improve future sustainment." Work is expected to be completed in March 2019.
According to navy.mil, the SLAM-ER has a range of over 250 km (135 nautical miles), and each unit costs $500,000. The missile's guidance system includes a Ring Laser Gyro Inertial Navigation System (INS) with multi-channel GPS, as well as an infrared seeker for terminal guidance with Man-in-the-Loop control data link from the controlling aircraft. Upgraded missiles incorporate Automatic Target Acquisition (ATA). It was first deployed by the navy in 2000.
