Reports in the Israeli media on Wednesday said that snipers from the Hezbollah terrorist group were responsible for Tuesday night's incident in which IDF troops near the northern border were fired upon from Lebanese territory.

The reports said the snipers took position about 300 meters away from the border in an area between two positions of the UNIFIL peacekeeping force. They fired two shots, which both missed. There were no casualties among the IDF troops.

In retaliation for the incident, IDF attack helicopters and other aircraft attacked Hezbollah targets in Lebanon including observation posts. The IDF also conducted an intensive sweep of the border area to ensure that there was no infiltration.

The IDF Chief of Staff, Lieut. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, visited the Northern Command on Wednesday to be briefed on the incident and the overall security situation in the sector.

Tuesday night's incident in the area of Kibbutz Menara in the Upper Galilee was the third attempt by Hezbollah over the last three weeks to carry out a terrorist attack. The assessment in Israel's defense establishment is that the terrorist organization will keep trying, and thus the IDF is maintaining its state of readiness on the border.
