Retired Austrian Colonel Suspected of Spying for Russia

An Austrian colonel is being investigated on suspicion of spying for Russia, the BBC reported, citing Austrian officials. The suspect's identity has not been publicly released.

The recently retired 70-year-old suspect is said to have been spying since the 1990s up until this year. According to media reports, he had been paid €300,000 for his services.

The news about an ongoing investigation into the case was revealed by Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz at a press briefing in Vienna on Friday.

Austrian Defense Minister Mario Kunasek said that the case came to light a "few weeks ago" with help from another European intelligence agency. "We can't say for the moment whether this is an isolated incident or not," Kunasek said.

The retired colonel attended NATO seminars and transferred information obtained there to Russian special services, Salzburger Nachrichten daily reported on Friday, according to TASS news agency.
