"Chemical Weapons Moved"

The Syrian opposition is claiming that Syria has transferred some of its chemical weapons to the Lebanese terrorist organization Hezbollah

The Syrian opposition has claimed that some of the chemical weapons controlled by the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria have been transferred to the Lebanon-based terrorist organization Hezbollah. According to the Saudi newspaper Al Wattan, a senior opposition official stated that the weapons were transferred to the organization in trucks.

According to the report, the Syrian regime also transferred chemical weapons to Russian naval vessels docked in Syria in trucks that were identified by the Free Syrian Army. The official additionally claimed that the Syrian opposition is in possession of reliable information that the Assad regime has smuggled some of its chemical arsenal onto the Russian vessels by way of barrels containing weapon components.

The Lebanese newspaper Al-Safir reported that Iran assisted in consolidating the new agreement for dismantling Syria's chemical weapons by convincing the Assad regime that the transfer of chemical weapons would not have any effect on its deterrence vis-à-vis Israel. According to the newspaper, a Russian defense official said that President Vladimir Putin provided personal assurances to the topmost officials in Damascus in order to get the Russian initiative implemented. The official also said that Russia recently delivered equipment to Syria "that testifies to Russia's concern for Syria's security."
