The Spanish Army has awarded German Heckler & Koch the supply of 11,700 rifles and pistols for an amount of €14 million. The Spanish website Infodefensa.com reports that at the end of December, both parties signed a framework agreement that specifically contemplates the purchase of up to 5,800 rifles for €11.6 million (€2,000 each) and 5,900 pistols for €2.47 million (€420 each), during the next three years.

There is little information available concerning the contract, and the model chosen in each case has not been revealed. However, everything indicates that the army has chosen to place a new order for USP pistols, already in service in the units.

In the case of rifles, there could be more doubts. In the absence of official confirmation, the selected model would be the G36, the weapon used by the Spanish soldier, although the Army could have opted for the HK 416 rifle, which has been used for some time now by the Marine Corps.

There is no precedent in recent years for contracts with this budget (23.75 million euros including possible extensions and modifications) and number of units, neither rifles nor pistols. This order will allow the renewal of the light weapons of the soldiers in the Army.
