Reports: Missile Strikes Targeted Arms Depots in Syria

Syrian media reported that the missiles targeted several military outposts in the Hama and Aleppo countryside, killing 26 fighters, including Iranian nationals. Lebanon's Al-Akhbar daily said the attack targeted "important arms depots used by the Syrian army and Iran's Revolutionary Guards"

A missile attack in Syria's northern region has killed 26 pro-government fighters, mostly Iranians, local media reported on Monday.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the late Sunday night attack appears to have been carried out by Israel and targeted an arms depot for surface-to-surface missiles at a base in northern Syria known as Brigade 47. The Observatory said four Syrians were also among casualties.

Iran's ISNA news agency said the strike killed 18 Iranians, including a commander, in a suburb of the central city of Hama. The missiles targeted buildings and centers which likely include a weapons depot, the semi-official news agency reported.

Syrian TV reported a "new aggression," with missiles targeting military outposts in northern Syria. The state-run television reported that the missiles targeted several military positions before midnight Sunday outposts in the Hama and Aleppo countryside.

Lebanon's Al-Akhbar daily, considered close to Hezbollah and the Syrian government, said the attack targeted "important arms depots used by the (Syrian) army and Iran's Revolutionary Guards." It said that missiles used in the attack appear to have been bunker busters.

Israel's Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman on Sunday addressed Iran's entrenchment in Syria at the Jerusalem Post Annual Conference in New York City. "Israel has only three problems," the defense minister said: “Iran, Iran, Iran."

"Iran is trying to destabilize the whole region, not only in Israel. Look at what is happening in Yemen, Lebanon, Iraq, Syria. Iran supports and creates proxies around Israel. Hamas and Islamic Jihad would not survive one week without Iranian support," he said, adding that over 85% of Hezbollah’s budget comes from Iran.

Lieberman stressed that Israel will stop at nothing to prevent Iran from using Syrian territory as a base to attack Israel. "We will maintain freedom of operation in all of Syria," he said when asked about Russia equipping Syria with advanced systems.

"We don’t have any intention to attack the Russians, or even to interfere in the domestic issues in Syria," he said. "But if someone thinks they can launch missiles to attack Israel or even our aircraft, there is no doubt we will respond, and respond very forcefully."
