Syrian Army: Israel Targeted Military Base near Damascus

The Syrian military said that Israel conducted a series of airstrikes on a base in al-Qutayfah, northeast of Damascus, which is home to the 155th Artillery Regiment. Syrian opposition media reported that the base was used to store weapons, specifically long-range missiles

The Syrian army said that the Israeli Air Force attacked military positions east of Damascus in a series of overnight raids.

According to the Syrian state news agency SANA, IAF jets flying inside Lebanese airspace fired several missiles towards the al-Qutaifa area, causing damage near the military site. According to the statement by the General Command, the regime’s air defenses intercepted the missiles and hit one of the planes, the Jerusalem Post adds.

Israel is also said to have fired two surface-to-surface missiles from the Golan Heights at 3:04 AM and another four missiles from around the area of Tiberias. The Syrian army statement claimed that all missiles were intercepted but that some damage was caused as a result of the interception.

Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and local opposition media reported that the strikes targeted the 155th Brigade where Hezbollah and the Syrian army have a weapons depot which houses Scud missile launchers.

The IDF did not comment on the alleged strike. According to the Times of Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said earlier today that Israel is prepared to take action to prevent advanced munitions from reaching the Hezbollah terrorist group. However, he did not confirm that the IDF conducted the strike.

"We have a longstanding policy to prevent the transfer of game-changing weapons to Hezbollah in Syrian territory. This policy has not changed. We back it up, if necessary, with action," Netanyahu said at an event with NATO officials in Jerusalem.

Mossad Chief Yossi Cohen said today that the proliferation of accurate Iranian missiles is a "growing concern for the peace of the entire Middle East." Speaking at a Finance Ministry event in Jerusalem, Cohen said, "We hear the concerns from Sunni leaders about Iran are growing, just as they are in Israel. We are hearing it from everywhere."
