Akamai to Buy LayerX to Expand AI Security Into the Browser
Acquisition targets growing blind spot in enterprise AI usage and Zero Trust enforcement
Akamai Technologies has agreed to acquire LayerX Security in a deal aimed at extending Zero Trust security into the browser layer, where most enterprise work and AI usage now occurs.
The move reflects rising concern that organizations lack visibility and control over how employees interact with generative AI tools, SaaS platforms, and emerging agent-based systems inside browsers.
LayerX provides browser-native security controls that monitor and govern user activity without requiring companies to switch to proprietary enterprise browsers, offering visibility into prompts, file uploads, and data sharing with AI systems.
Akamai said the acquisition strengthens its ability to enforce “AI usage control” at the point where employees actually interact with tools, rather than at the network or application level.
“Our existing controls cannot see how employees are interacting with AI tools,” said Mani Sundaram. “LayerX helps close that gap.”
LayerX CEO Or Eshed said the combined platform will enable safer large-scale AI adoption across enterprises.
The deal will integrate LayerX into Akamai’s existing Zero Trust portfolio, which includes access control and application security tools.
Financial terms were not fully disclosed beyond a reported value of about $205 million. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026.
