Israels Railways Turns to AI to Predict the Next Track Hazard
Before a collision happens, a new smart detection system is designed to spot the warning signs and trigger a response in real time
Israel Railways is turning to artificial intelligence to tackle one of the oldest challenges facing rail operators worldwide: keeping unexpected obstacles off the tracks.
Zorronet, a subsidiary of Israeli technology company BiomX, has begun installing and operating AI- and machine learning-powered detection and command-and-control systems across sections of the Israel Railways network, as part of a framework agreement aimed at improving infrastructure safety.
The system combines multiple data sources with AI-based analysis to detect the presence of animals and humans near railway tracks, assess the level of risk, analyze behavior patterns, and generate alerts or automated responses based on the detected threat.
The initial deployment covers four railway segments, with additional sections expected to be added in the future. The technology was customized for Israel Railways’ operational requirements in collaboration with the company’s innovation division, including predictive capabilities designed to anticipate potential incidents before they occur.
The company said the technology has already demonstrated strong results during its pilot phase, paving the way for its operational deployment across the railway network.
“Over the past year we successfully completed a large-scale pilot, achieving a 98% success rate in keeping large animals off the railway tracks,” said Idan Wasserman, CEO of Zorronet. “We are now moving forward with installation and operation and look forward to strengthening cooperation as Israel Railways continues to develop its infrastructure.”
The deployment comes as Israel continues to expand its rail network, including the recent opening of a new eastern railway line, creating additional opportunities for advanced monitoring and safety technologies.
