German drone manufacturer Quantum Systems is preparing to make an official attempt in the coming weeks to break the world speed record for horizontal flight by a battery-powered electric aircraft. The announcement follows a major milestone achieved by the company's advanced development division, N3XT, during internal flight tests on June 26, when its high-speed UAV, the Apex Recordhunter, reached an impressive 699 km/h (434 mph) in level flight.

According to a special statement by Quantum Systems to the German defense news outlet Hartpunkt, the result unofficially surpasses the current world record of 685 km/h (426 mph). The aircraft, developed over the past year, serves as a technology demonstrator for the company's next generation of high-speed electric propulsion systems.

The company stressed that the project is about more than setting a speed record. It is designed to validate new technologies that will be integrated into future interceptor drone programs. The aircraft had already reached 650 km/h during tests at the end of May, and engineers have since pushed its performance even further. Quantum Systems hinted that the next target could be even higher, describing the latest achievement as only the beginning of the development process.

At the same time, the company is expanding its operational activities in Eastern Europe. Its Ukrainian subsidiary, WIY Drones, is preparing a series of flight tests next week aimed at establishing official Ukrainian speed records for interceptor drones.

As part of the trials, engineers will attempt to set a new speed benchmark for FPV interceptor drones carrying a dedicated 0.5 kg payload using the Strila interceptor platform. A separate large-scale speed test is also planned for air-defense interceptor drones based on the Spys platform.

Company representatives said the record attempts reflect the ongoing development of advanced interception systems designed to counter increasingly fast and maneuverable aerial threats. Developing higher-speed interceptor drones has become particularly critical on the modern battlefield, especially to counter jet-powered attack drones such as Russia's Geran-4.

These attack drones are capable of reaching speeds of approximately 500 km/h and can maneuver at speeds between 300 and 400 km/h. Air defense experts estimate that an interceptor drone generally requires at least a 25% speed advantage over its target to achieve a successful interception, highlighting the operational significance of Quantum Systems' latest technological breakthrough.
