The F-35 stealth fighter jets are entering a key modernization phase with the delivery of the first two U.S. Marine Corps F-35B aircraft upgraded with the Technology Refresh 3 (TR-3) package.
As reported in The Aviationist, the upgrade work was carried out at the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Readiness Center East in cooperation with Lockheed Martin, marking the start of a transition toward a configuration that will underpin future Block 4 capabilities.
TR-3 significantly enhances the F-35’s computing power, memory, and processing architecture to support next-generation sensors, electronic warfare systems, and weapons integration. While not a new variant, it provides the digital foundation for the Block 4 upgrade, which includes a new radar, improved electronic warfare systems, upgraded targeting, and enhanced cockpit displays.
The U.S. Navy and Marine Corps say TR-3 improves the aircraft’s ability to process data from multiple sensors simultaneously, delivering a more integrated battlefield picture. Some Block 4 capabilities are still in development and will be introduced gradually.
According to reports, the Pentagon resumed accepting TR-3-configured aircraft in 2024, though full capability rollout remains ongoing.
