Phinergy Unveils Zero-Emission Alternative to Diesel Backup Generators for Data Centers

The company presented the technology last week at the Datacloud Global Congress in Cannes, as demand for large-scale backup power accelerates alongside the rapid expansion of AI-driven infrastructure. Phinergy estimates the data center backup power market at around 140GW, worth $150–200 billion over the next five years.

Today, data centers rely heavily on diesel generators to ensure continuous operation during grid outages. In regions such as Virginia, one of the world’s largest data center hubs, more than 10,000 diesel generators are in use, contributing to rising environmental concerns and regulatory scrutiny.

Phinergy’s system generates electricity through an electrochemical reaction between aluminum and oxygen in the air. The company says the process produces no combustion and eliminates on-site emissions such as CO2, NOx, and SOx. Each energy load can provide up to 48 hours of backup power, with extended runtime enabled by replacing aluminum plates.

The system is designed to integrate with existing electrical infrastructure and match the response times of conventional diesel generators, while removing the need for fuel storage and on-site emissions handling. The company says this could reduce permitting delays and ease regulatory constraints on new data center projects.

Phinergy said its technology was selected by the Net Zero Innovation Hub, a consortium led by Google and Microsoft, as a preferred zero-emission alternative for backup power. The company is currently participating in a validation project and has received letters of intent for potential gigawatt-scale deployments.
