Cybertech & Sparks: Prof. Dan Blumberg Highlights the Growing Risk to Societal Trust
Innovation alone won’t keep pace with evolving cyber threats, Prof. Blumberg warns, calling for developing talent, fostering collaboration, and reinforcing societal trust as the foundation of global cybersecurity
At the joint Cybertech Global TLV conference and Sparks Innovation Festival yesterday (Wednesday), Prof. Dan Blumberg, Vice President of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (BGU), delivered a compelling message about the accelerating challenges and responsibilities facing the global cybersecurity community.
Opening his remarks, Prof. Blumberg emphasized that while innovation continues to outpace emerging cyber threats, maintaining this advantage demands consistent investment, vigilance, and global collaboration. He outlined four central points, placing special emphasis on the last:
Innovation is still outpacing threats — but the gap requires effort, not luck.
Talent is the greatest differentiator — and developing talent at scale is essential to the future of cybersecurity.
Collaboration must replace the old culture of secrecy. As Blumberg noted, “Cyber adversaries collaborate extremely well; it’s time the rest of us caught up.”
Cybersecurity is now fundamental to societal trust.
Prof. Blumberg warned that the rapid advancement of technologies such as deepfakes poses a direct and growing challenge to public confidence in digital information and institutions. With realistic fabricated content proliferating, he stressed that strengthening cybersecurity capabilities is not merely a technical concern but a societal imperative. He added a lighthearted remark to underscore a serious reality:
“Deepfakes may be getting more realistic — but if any of you see a deepfake of me saying something brilliant, please feel free to share it widely.”
Despite the humor, Prof. Blumberg’s message was clear: when truth becomes harder to authenticate, cybersecurity becomes the bedrock upon which modern societies must rely.
BGU continues to lead in applied cybersecurity research, education, and global partnerships — advancing innovative solutions while preparing the next generation of cyber defenders.
