UK MOD Awards £20m Contract to Upgrade L111A1 Heavy Machine Gun
FN UK to deliver mid-life improvements and long-term support for British Armed Forces’ primary heavy machine gun

Defense Equipment & Support, the procurement arm of the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), has awarded a new 10-year, £20 million contract to FN UK, the country’s only manufacturer and assembler of machine guns, to upgrade and sustain the L111A1 Heavy Machine Gun.
The agreement includes a two-year mid-life improvement program followed by eight years of in-service support. All upgrade work will be carried out at FN UK’s facility in Kent. Under the contract schedule, 18% of the weapons are to be upgraded by March 2026, 50% by March 2027, and the remaining 32% by March 2028.
The L111A1, a 12.7mm (.50 caliber) system derived from the Browning M2, is regarded as one of the most reliable heavy machine guns ever fielded. With an effective range of 1,800 meters, it provides close-range fire support from ground tripods, vehicles, and Royal Navy ships, where it is commonly deployed against fast inshore attack craft.
According to defense industry outlet Monch.com, the upgrade program is intended to address obsolescence issues, improve performance and reliability, and reduce long-term maintenance costs. The initiative is expected to save the MOD an estimated £9 million while ensuring the weapon continues to deliver critical firepower across Army and Navy operations.
