The Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems have completed development of the Iron Beam, a high-power laser air defense system, following a successful series of live-fire trials in southern Israel.

The multi-week testing program, carried out by the Defense Research & Development Directorate (DDR&D), the Israeli Air Force (IAF), and Rafael, validated the system’s ability to intercept rockets, mortars, drones, and aircraft under operational conditions. Officials said the trials mark the last step before delivery to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), with the first units expected to join Israel’s air defense network before the end of 2025.

Iron Beam is designed as a cost-effective complement to Israel’s multi-layered missile defense array, which already includes Iron Dome, David’s Sling, and the Arrow systems. The laser system employs Rafael’s adaptive optics technology to maintain a stable, precise beam, providing rapid, repeatable interceptions at a fraction of the cost of interceptor missiles.

Development of Iron Beam was led by IMOD’s DDR&D in partnership with Rafael, with Elbit Systems supplying the laser source. Officials say the technology will provide the IDF with a significant new capability in defending against short-range aerial threats, particularly high-volume rocket and mortar attacks.

Rafael confirmed that short-range tactical laser prototypes have already been used during the current conflict, intercepting dozens of targets. The new long-range Iron Beam system, now cleared for deployment, is intended to scale those capabilities to a national level.

“The Iron Beam will fundamentally change Israel’s defense equation by enabling precise, rapid, and cost-effective interception unmatched by any current system,” said Rafael CEO Yoav Tourgeman.
