The Indian startup Flying Wedge Defense and Aerospace (FWDA) unveiled this week its new UAV, “Kaal Bhairava”, the first MALE (Medium Altitude Long Endurance) drone fully developed in India. The reveal marks a significant milestone in India’s pursuit of military-technological independence.

The new UAV, based on advanced artificial intelligence, offers impressive capabilities: 30 hours of continuous flight with an operational range of 3,000 kilometers. According to Suhas Tajeskanda, CEO and founder of the company, the system is intended for long-range reconnaissance missions, precision strikes, and collaboration with other UAVs in autonomous swarms.

The system compares favorably with leading UAVs worldwide, such as the American MQ-9B Reaper or the Israeli Searcher, while offering significant advantages in cost and lower risk levels.

For decades, India relied on imported UAVs, which affected its strategic autonomy. Increasing tensions with the United States over trade tariffs, along with geopolitical complexities surrounding oil imports from Russia, highlighted the need to develop independent defense capabilities.

“India cannot continue to rely on the import of critical defense capabilities,” emphasized Tajeskanda, “especially when it comes to systems essential for national security.”

One of the most notable advantages of the new UAV is its production composition: 80% of its components are manufactured locally in India. This ensures stable and consistent supply, as well as the ability to provide maintenance and refurbishment without reliance on external parties.

The company is not stopping at this achievement: it recently launched a loitering munition with a range of 100 kilometers, and an unmanned bomber with an operational range of 800 kilometers is in advanced stages of production.

The development places India among the exclusive group of countries capable of independently developing and producing advanced UAVs and strengthens its position as a rising technological power in the defense sector.
