UK Unveils First Digital Rendering of Tempest Sixth-Generation Fighter Jet
Joint project with Italy and Japan showcases advanced design and technologies ahead of prototype flight in 2027
The UK has released the first digital rendering of the future Tempest fighter jet, a joint project with Italy and Japan to develop a sixth-generation combat aircraft. According to the military tracking site The War Zone, the design bears a strong resemblance to the American F-35 by Lockheed Martin. The rendering was published by BAE Systems, which is leading the development at its facilities in Warton, England.
The rendering shows an aircraft with twin tails and supersonic air intakes feeding two EJ200 turbofan engines. Since it’s a twin-engine jet, the fuselage is wider than that of the F-35, flat on top, and features an especially large nose—likely designed to house radar and antennas. However, the cockpit appears relatively small, which may make rearward visibility difficult for the pilot.
According to BAE Systems, about two-thirds of the aircraft’s structural weight is already in production. The company noted the use of advanced robotics, digital manufacturing, 3D printing, virtual simulations, and innovative engineering techniques. “We are building the future of combat aviation by integrating capabilities never seen before,” said Jeff Taylor, Vice President of the company’s Air Division.
Under the current timeline, the first Tempest prototype is expected to take flight in 2027, with entry into service with the British Royal Air Force anticipated around 2035. The project involves extensive collaboration with defense industries in Italy and Japan, as part of an effort to develop a stealth fighter that can meet future threats. “The international market is eagerly awaiting this aircraft,” said Dr. Hiroshi Sato, a senior advisor at Japan’s Ministry of Defense.
The rendering currently serves as a “technology demonstrator,” but it marks a step forward in the project’s progress toward a first field test. Military experts estimate that in the coming years, more details will be revealed about the aircraft’s weapons and sensor systems, as part of a global race to develop next-generation fighter jets.
