The Israel Ministry of Defense (IMOD) has announced the signing of a major contract with American defense manufacturer AM General for the procurement of hundreds of High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs) for the IDF Ground Forces, valued at approximately $150 million (NIS 500 million). The first batch of vehicles—several dozen—is expected to arrive later this year.
HMMWVs are light tactical vehicles designed for a wide range of battlefield missions, including troop transport, casualty evacuation, logistical resupply, fire support, communications, maintenance, training, and special operations.
The vehicles being procured offer high cross-country mobility, an extended operational lifespan, and simplified maintenance and operation. The specific configuration includes adaptations for transporting more than ten soldiers, evacuating multiple casualties, and providing fire support.
This substantial procurement marks another significant step by the IDF to bolster the capabilities of its ground forces, particularly in terms of maneuverability and logistics. Just days earlier, the IMOD also announced the purchase of 7.62 mm Negev 7 and UX machine guns from Israeli weapons manufacturer IWI, valued at NIS 67 million, aimed at enhancing the firepower of ground units.
