Satellite Images Reveal: Extensive Earthworks at Fordow Nuclear Facility
Increased activity of heavy machinery and Iranian crews around the ventilation shafts at the enrichment site, amid rising international tensions over the nuclear program
Recent satellite images provide a rare glimpse into Iranian activity at the uranium enrichment facility in Fordow, which was recently targeted by U.S. Air Force B-2 bombers. The images, captured by MAXAR Technologies and published by CNN, show the movement of heavy engineering equipment and work crews within the facility and its immediate surroundings.
According to a CNN report, the images taken on Sunday depict intense activity around the Fordow ventilation system and near areas damaged by the bombings. MAXAR stated that the photos show a tractor and several workers engaged in earthworks near the northern ventilation facility, which is located above the site’s underground section. Additionally, a crane was observed operating near one of the ventilation facility’s entrances, and several vehicles were parked at the main access road to Fordow.
The American strike on the Fordow facility was carried out using more than a dozen bunker-buster bombs dropped from advanced B-2 bombers. U.S. Army Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman General Dan Keane addressed the incident at the Pentagon, noting that air crews targeted the munitions directly at the ventilation openings, primarily the main vent.
According to expert David Albright, the images suggest that the Iranians are actively working in the ventilation openings area. He noted that the work might be aimed at filling the craters created by the bombings or possibly collecting radiological samples to assess the damage inflicted. CNN points out that the official report from the U.S. military detailing the extent of damage to the attacked Iranian nuclear facilities has not yet been released.
Recent developments around the Fordow facility underscore the escalating tensions between Iran and the United States and raise new questions about the future of Iran’s nuclear program and the possible response of the international community.
