U.S. Approves Major Arms Sales to Israel Totaling Over $3.5 Billion

The U.S. State Department has approved three major arms deals for Israel, amounting to more than $3.5 billion, as part of continued military support amid ongoing regional tensions. The approvals, announced by the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA), include the sale of precision-guided munitions, guidance kits, and Caterpillar D9 bulldozers to enhance the operational capabilities of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

$2.04 Billion Munitions and Support Package

The largest of the approved deals is a $2.04 billion package comprising various types of air-to-ground munitions and related support. The deal includes Joint Direct Attack Munitions (JDAM) kits, which convert unguided bombs into precision-guided weapons, as well as other advanced munitions designed to bolster Israel's ability to conduct high-precision strikes. The package also provides logistical and technical support to ensure the long-term operability of these systems.

$1 Billion in Precision-Guided Munitions and Kits

A separate $1 billion deal focuses on additional precision-guided munitions and guidance kits. This package includes BLU-109 bunker-buster bombs, which are designed to penetrate fortified structures, as well as laser and GPS-guided systems to improve targeting accuracy. According to the DSCA, these capabilities are crucial for Israel’s self-defense and for maintaining a qualitative military edge (QME) in the region, a long-standing U.S. policy commitment.

$295 Million Caterpillar D9 Armored Bulldozer Sale

In addition to munitions, the U.S. has also approved the sale of heavy-duty Caterpillar D9 armored bulldozers to Israel for approximately $295 million. The IDF has long used these bulldozers for engineering and combat operations, particularly in urban warfare and border security. The sale includes D9R and D9T models, along with spare parts, maintenance services, and anti-corrosion protection to ensure long-term durability. These armored bulldozers have proven instrumental in clearing obstacles, constructing defensive positions, and supporting maneuvering forces in challenging environments.

Strategic and Political Implications

The approval of these sales comes amid heightened regional tensions, with Israel continuing to engage in military operations and facing evolving security threats. The expedited approval process bypassed some standard review procedures, citing Israel’s urgent security needs. The DSCA emphasized that the deals are consistent with U.S. foreign policy interests and support Israel’s national defense.

The transactions now await finalization, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027. While the sales have been approved by the State Department, they still require congressional review. Given Israel’s status as a key U.S. ally, approval from Congress is widely anticipated.
