Morocco to Acquire 36 ATMOS Howitzers from Israel’s Elbit Systems
The deal, valued at hundreds of millions of dollars, underscores Morocco’s shift toward Israeli military technology and strengthens defense ties between the two nations
Elbit Systems has secured a contract to supply Morocco with 36 ATMOS 2000 155mm wheeled self-propelled howitzers. These artillery systems will be mounted on Czech Tatra trucks. Based on previous contracts in recent years, the deal is estimated to be worth several hundred million dollars.
The website Army Recognition notes that, according to sources in French media, this decision follows operational challenges with the French-made CAESAR howitzers, delivered in 2022 by KNDS France. The Royal Moroccan Armed Forces (FAR) encountered recurring technical issues with the CAESAR systems, prompting them to seek a more reliable and efficient alternative, which they found in Elbit's cannons. Morocco's choice reflects a growing preference for Israeli military technology over traditional European suppliers.
This deal marks another significant step in strengthening security ties between Israel and Morocco. In 2021, the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding that facilitates arms deals, intelligence cooperation, and joint military projects. In 2023, Morocco ordered Barak MX air defense missiles worth $1 billion from Israel Aerospace Industries and integrated 20 radars manufactured by Elta into its F-5E fighter jets.
Elbit's ATMOS has achieved considerable commercial success in recent years and is in high demand worldwide. The Philippine Army has operated 12 ATMOS systems for years and is considering additional purchases. The system is also among five contenders for the U.S. Army's Future Self-Propelled Howitzer Tender. In 2024, Denmark received the first shipment of 19 ATMOS howitzers from Elbit. In 2023, Colombia reportedly purchased ATMOS systems worth approximately $102 million. Additionally, the system has been sold to various countries, including Azerbaijan, Botswana, Cameroon, Thailand, Romania, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia.
