The Spanish Army has announced its plan to replace approximately 80 Leopard 2A4 tanks with the Leopard 2A8, equipped with the Israeli-made EuroTrophy Active Protection System (APS) developed by Rafael. This, according to the Spanish website Defensa.com

Spain thus joins a growing list of European countries, including Sweden, Germany, Norway, Italy, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Croatia, and the Czech Republic, that are acquiring hundreds of these advanced tanks. This decision underscores the continued commercial success of the Leopard 2A8 tanks and the "EuroTrophy" system across Europe.

Upgrading Spain's Leopard 2A4 tanks to the Leopard 2A8 standard will provide significant advancements in protection, mobility, and firepower. Armyrecognition notes that the Leopard 2A8 features updated armor systems designed to counter threats such as anti-tank guided missiles and improvised explosive devices.

It also incorporates an improved fire control system and enhanced main gun accuracy, boosting operational effectiveness. Additionally, upgrades to the propulsion and suspension systems improve mobility across diverse terrains. This modernization aligns with the Spanish Army's objective to maintain an armored force that meets current operational demands.
