Elbit Introduces Sling120mm Mortars to the UK Market
This move follows the British Army's announcement in March 2024 of plans to upgrade its mortar capabilities by adding new 120mm mortars alongside its existing 81mm L16 systems, with some older mortars potentially being replaced entirely
Israeli defense giant Elbit Systems is entering the competition for the British Army's future mortar program. The company announced its plans to introduce the Sling 120mm mortar to the British market in 2025.
Elbit's move follows the British Army's announcement in March 2024 of plans to upgrade its mortar capabilities by adding new 120mm mortars alongside its existing 81mm L16 systems, with some older mortars potentially being replaced entirely.
In September, the British company Babcock unveiled its Ground Deployed Advanced Mortar System (GDAMS), a 120mm mortar mounted on a vehicle. Developed in collaboration with Singapore’s ST Engineering and Australia’s Supacat, this system underwent testing by the British Army just last month.
Meanwhile, the Finnish company Patria and Germany’s Rheinmetall have presented a prototype of the Nemo 120mm motorized mortar mounted on a Boxer armored personnel carrier, targeting the British Army's requirements.
Elbit Systems describes its 120mm Sling mortar as a proven system that enhances deployability, lethality, and survivability for light forces. The system features a fully qualified suite of ammunition, including standard types and the Iron Sting Guided Mortar Munition (GMM). Its integrated Fire Control System (FCS) enables accurate fire within 30 seconds of deployment from the line of march. Additionally, the system can complete its firing mission and redeploy before being exposed to counter-battery fire—a critical capability for modern battlefield survivability.
The Sling mortar is compatible with various light platforms, such as the Supacat Jackal and Toyota vehicles, offering flexibility across diverse operational scenarios. It delivers a maximum fire rate of 16 bombs per minute, with a sustained rate of 3-4 bombs per minute, and a range of up to 7 kilometers with standard ammunition.
As a key supplier of mortar systems to NATO countries, including the United States, Denmark, Romania, and Spain, Elbit Systems brings extensive expertise to the program. This experience positions the Sling as a strong candidate to meet the operational needs of British forces.
