After days of intense exchanges of fire between Israel and Lebanon, a ceasefire came into effect this morning at 4:00 AM, as announced by official sources in both countries. The agreement, reached following accelerated negotiations under international mediation, includes significant provisions aimed at ensuring long-term calm in the region.

Under the agreement, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will gradually withdraw from its positions in southern Lebanon within 60 days. Simultaneously, Hezbollah will retreat north of the Litani River, and the Lebanese Army will deploy along the border to prevent incursions by hostile elements.

“We have reached an agreement that enables us to achieve our objectives while maintaining the security of our citizens,” said Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a televised statement. “The IDF has demonstrated its capabilities, and this agreement is a significant achievement for Israel’s security.”

The Challenge: Enforcement and Sustaining Calm

Despite the importance of the agreement, several major challenges remain. One of these is enforcing the terms on the ground. While both Israel and Lebanon have agreed to uphold the right to self-defense, differing interpretations of an "immediate threat" could lead to disagreements and future tensions. Additionally, there are concerns that other armed groups operating in Lebanon may exploit the situation to carry out attacks.

The United States, which played a central role in mediating the agreement, has pledged to assist in maintaining the ceasefire. “We will continue working with all parties to ensure the truce holds and evolves into a stable and sustainable peace,” said U.S. President Joe Biden.

The Days Leading Up to the Ceasefire

The days preceding the ceasefire were marked by a significant escalation in hostilities. Hezbollah launched barrages of rockets at Israel, prompting the IDF to retaliate with airstrikes targeting sites in the Beirut area. The escalation peaked yesterday when the Israeli Air Force struck buildings linked to the organization’s financial activities.

The ceasefire, which took effect this morning, represents an important step in de-escalating the situation in the north. However, the path to a stable and lasting peace remains long, requiring substantial efforts from both sides to build trust and overcome historic divisions.
