Operation “Breaking Dawn”: Nearly 600 rockets fired from the Gaza Strip at Israel

Nearly 600 rockets were fired from Gaza to Israel over the past 36 hours, since Israel launched Operation “Breaking Dawn” on Friday afternoon against the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) – one of the main Palestinian terrorist groups and an Iran proxy responsible for countless bloody attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers.

Shortly after 4 pm on Friday afternoon (August 5th), the IDF announced it had targeted and eliminated Tayseer Jabari, on of the Islamic Jihad’s top figures in the Gaza Strip. This followed a tense week that began on Monday with the arrest of  PIJ’s commander in the West Bank, Bassam al-Saadi.

Over the next four days, Israeli security forces blocked off civilian areas and routes near the border with Gaza, citing a “direct threat of a possible attack on Israeli civilians.”

Following the successful targeted attack against Jabari, the IDF continued to strike terrorist targets and posts in the Gaza Strip. The IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Aviv Kohavi instructed the IDF to enter emergency mode, while Israel braced itself for rocket attacks that would surely be fired from Gaza.

As expected, a few short hours after the initial IDF strike, the Islamic Jihad began firing rockets over the border into Israel, aiming at civilian targets. As of yet, some 580 rockets have been counted, with over 450 of them crossing the border into Israel and the rest falling short and landing in Gaza.

Israel’s Iron Dome has managed to intercept 96% of the rockets launched, according to IDF data. Thanks to this system and to other security measures such as security rooms, there has been some damage to Israeli residences and cars, but no lives have been lost. Several rockets hit inhabited homes – but the residents were in the security rooms and were unharmed. One rocket hit a flock of herons, killing many.

Last night, the Palestinians claimed that four children were killed in an Israeli aerial attack on Jabalia, a Gaza neighborhood also known as a refugee camp. However, the IDF maintains that it did not attack that area and that this tragedy was, in fact, due to a Jihad rocket aimed at Israel, which fell short, backing this up with a video.

“The Islamic Jihad is killing Palestinian children in Gaza. One in four rockets fired from Gaza towards Israel – lands inside the Gaza Strip,” said International Spokeswoman for Prime Minister Yair Lapid, Keren Hajioff, in a statement.

“Iran’s proxies – including Islamic Jihad – have a long history of hiding behind civilians to target Israeli civilians. Israel will continue to stand up to this vicious terrorist organization – which threatens Israelis and Palestinians alike."

Overnight, the IDF targeted and killed the Islamic Jihad’s southern Gaza division commander, Khaled Mansour, another figure behind dozens of attacks against Israelis. The IDF had also destroyed PIJ underground tunnels in the Gaza strip, meant to stretch all the way into Israel and serve as another way to launch acts of terror, and has been targeting various other Islamic Jihad targets in the Gaza Strip. Hamas – the terror group which is the de facto ruler of this area – is left out of the equation for now. This morning, the IDF updated that it has attacked 139 JIP targets, including weapon stashes and rocket launching areas.

"The Israeli government will not allow terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip to set the agenda in the area adjacent to the Gaza Strip and threaten the citizens of the State of Israel,” said Israeli Prime Minister, Yair Lapid, on Friday.

“Anyone who tries to harm Israel should know: we will find you. The security forces will act against Islamic Jihad terrorists to eliminate the threat they pose to the citizens of Israel."

"The goal is to protect the State of Israel and the citizens of Israel - we will not allow anyone to threaten or harm the citizens of Israel,” added Minister of Defense, Benny Gantz. “Whoever tries to do so - will get hurt."
