The Czech MoD announced this week that the army’s designated marksmen will be equipped with new telescopic rifles CZ Bren 2 PPS. These rifles are designed to replace the aging Dragunov SVD and a first batch of 242 CZ Bren 2 PPS rifles was recently issued to the troops, to be followed by another 108 this year to replace the Dragunov.

According to German website Soldat & Techniks, the CZ Bren 2 PPS is manufactured by the Czech manufacturer CZ (Česká zbrojovka) AND based on the Bren 2, which was developed from the 805 BREN in caliber 5.56mm x 45 or 7.62mm x 39 that has been on the market for a number of years. The caliber 7.62 mm x 51, the setup and the 25-round magazine appear to be the same. The biggest difference concerns the barrel length. While the BR shows a 16-inch barrel, the PPS seems to have a much longer, at least 18-inch barrel version.

In late 2021 Israel Defense reported that the Czech army had acquired about 1,000 FN Minimi machine guns worth over $50 million. It appears that the purchase of sniper rifles is - as the purchase of the machine guns – is also part of the modernization plan launched by the Czech army for the purchase of new small arms systems.
