Search company Elastic, developer of Elasticsearch and Elastic Stack, announced that it has signed an agreement to acquire Israel's build.security, which built a platform for definition and enforcement of information security policies based on the open source standard Open Policy Agent (OPA) that enables organizations to enforce security policies for cloud native environments.
Elastic built the industry’s only free and open Limitless Extended Detection and Response (XDR), which unifies the capabilities of security information and event management (SIEM) with the capability to protect endpoints such as servers and personal computers, including in the cloud, all in a single platform.
The combination of forces with build.security expands the capabilities of Elastic's Limitless XDR and enables users to enforce information security policies across their physical and virtual servers, as well as on applications and services that use containers on the Kubernetes platform.
By adding build.security's technology and capabilities to Elastic's solution, customers of Elastic will be able to continuously monitor and ensure that their cloud environments are secure and in line with well-established information security standards such as the Center for Internet Security (CIS) benchmarks.
The revolutionary solution of build.security for management and enforcement of authorization controls enables organizations to easily enforce these policies across applications and services when they are deployed in the cloud. Using the Open Policy Agent (OPA), an open source engine for enforcing information security policies, build.security provides developers with the building blocks for generating and managing authorization controls across a large number pf enterprise applications while reducing security vulnerabilities.
OPA is project of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) that is becoming increasingly popular in the open source community. By joining forces, Elastic and build.security intend to build the ability to manage OPA policies directly in Kibana, enforce OPA policies through the Elastic Agent, and store the results within Elasticsearch using a format of Elastic called Elastic Common Schema (ECS).
The initial integration with build.security will focus on the Kubernetes environment, specifically Kubernetes admission controller, in order to enforce information security policy in real time in the Kubernetes environment. It will continue with build-time policy enforcement and scanning cloud configuration files. With these capabilities, users will be able to enforce information security policies earlier in the lifecycle of their cloud-native applications and services.
build.security is headquartered in Tel Aviv. The company's team will be the foundation for the expansion of Elastic's presence in Israel, and Amit Kanfer, co-founder and CEO of build.security, will serve as manager of Elastic's site in Israel. The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
