The LockBit ransomware gang announced that it attacked Petrologis Canarias, a supplier of maritime refueling services, at the beginning of this month. The supplier, based in Spain's Canary Islands, claims that it has 73,500 cubic meters, or 19.4 million gallons, for the refueling of vessels. The company that operates from the Port of Las Palmas also supplies maritime logistical services.

Jack Jordan, managing editor of the Ship & Bunker publication, characterized Petrologis as a small-to-midsize player in a small market, and a "key place you might stop off coming from Africa."

"If that facility were to disappear, it would be inconvenient for ships traversing the Canaries," said Jordan. Vessels might have to refuel in Gibraltar or South Africa instead.

It appears that the attack on Petrologis did not halt the operations of the fuel provider. However, the extent of the incident remains unclear. The company claims that the attack did not impact its business operations, and that it fixed the problem by rebooting the affected computers.

Meanwhile, the hackers are preparing to leak more than 11 gigabytes of stolen data in retaliation for Petrologis not paying ransom.
