Russia's Kalashnikov Group will unveil a new 9x19mm caliber submachine gun, the PPK-20, at the Army 2021 exhibition that will be held at the end of August on the outskirts of Moscow.
According to the company, the submachine gun, which is based on the Vityaz-MO rifle, has completed a series of official state tests, and the Russian Ministry of Defense is currently considering whether to procure the weapon for the Armed Forces. The rifle is intended, among others, for air crews.
The Kalashnikov Group says that the PPK-20 was significantly modified to make it more compact. When the butt stock is folded, its length is only 41cm. The trials showed that when 7N21 ammunition is used, the PPK-20 can penetrate Level 3A body armor. With this type of round, the muzzle velocity is nearly 470 meters per second, and the weapon's range is 360 meters.
The group also said that if the tests are successful, it will be ready to start production of the PPK-20, which also has significant export potential. According to the company, the PPK-20 can serve as a personal defense weapon or as a firearm for combat vehicle crews, support units, or even Special Forces units that operate in urban areas, inside structures and vehicles, and in crowded environments.
