Meir Ben-Shabbat, Israel's national security advisor and head of the National Security Council, informed Prime Minister Naftali Bennett of his intention to step down after serving for four years in the post. Upon the formation of the new government, the head of the NSC accepted the prime minister's request that he remain in his post so that stability and operational continuity can be maintained. Thus, Ben-Shabbat helped the prime minister and his staff as they entered their posts.

Ben-Shabbat will serve in his post until the end of August. The prime minister will appoint the next head of the NSC soon, and the handover process will be conducted in an orderly manner with the outgoing head of the NSC.

Prime Minister Bennett thanked the head of the NSC for his tremendous contribution to the national security of the State of Israel, and said, "I would like to commend Meir Ben-Shabbat for his many years of contribution to the security of Israel in a professional and successful manner. Meir held a series of posts, and in all of them he had impressive achievements, displaying a deep understanding of the political and security challenges faced by the State of Israel."

"In the COVID-19 crisis, Meir worked day and night for the health of the citizens of Israel, and functioned in a commendable way. I am absolutely certain that he will greatly contribute to the State of Israel in the future as well," the prime minister added.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz said, "Personally and on behalf of the defense establishment, I would like to thank Meir Ben-Shabbat for his decades of service for the security and internal resiliency of the State of Israel. Meir took part in significant processes in the region in recent years, and I am sure that he will continue to serve the State of Israel in the future."
