The U.S. Naval Air Systems Command has signed a $472.47 million contract with Lockheed Martin for development of three new weapon systems for F-35 stealth fighters as well as their integration by March 2026.

The Defense Department announced that the new weapon systems will provide unique capabilities for the F-35s of the UK and Italy. The department did not specify the weapon systems, but its description of "unique weapons capabilities" is believed to refer to the Selective Precision Effects At Range (SPEAR) 3 missile, produced by missile company MBDA, which Lockheed Martin will integrate into the F-35s that it manufactures.

This year, the UK chose the Spear 3 missile as a munition for its F-35 fighters, which take off and land vertically, on the Royal Navy's modern aircraft carriers such as the HMS Queen Elizabeth.
