The Soldat & Technik website quoted sources in the British media as saying that the British Army intends to set up a new Special Forces brigade. It said that a ranger regiment with around 1,000 soldiers is to be created as part of the upcoming reform of the armed forces.

The ranger regiment is said to consist of four battalions of around 250 soldiers, with the first one expected to be ready for action by the end of the year. The Tier 2 body will become part of the Army Special Operations Brigade to be set up and will carry out its own Special Forces missions as well as support Tier 1 units - Special Air Service and Special Boat Service - in action. In addition to specialized infantry and reconnaissance forces, it is reported that specialists in electronic combat and cyber operations will also become part of the Special Forces brigade.

The regiment will also work with "Influence and Outreach" troops, who specialize in social media and online communication, to gather information about the enemy and the battlefield, the British media said.

The main task of the ranger regiment will reportedly be cooperation and training support of security forces in partner countries. Similar to the US Army Special Forces known as Green Berets, the rangers with a small logistical footprint are supposed to train local forces in conflict areas as part of so-called military assistance operations, as well as accompany them in combat, the report said.
